Soup Town Siblings

On a Christmas card this year, my brother, Jerry, wrote:

Merry Christmas DeRay, Jeanette, Amy & Eddy.                December 18, 2018
Our thoughts are with you during this holiday season.
This time of year, one tends to reflect on the past and how things used to be. In our home in Orderville, we did not have a telephone, a T.V. or a radio that worked until later. The computer, cell phone and gadgets that take up so much of our time today had not been invented. We made our own games & fun. We still milked cows by hand, raised our own pork and cured the ham & bacon. Mama made butter, cottage cheese and head cheese. She bottled all of our fruit & vegetables. We walked to school and it was 5 miles and uphill both ways. That might be a bit of a stretch, but we did walk to school and if the short-cut across the flume trail was muddy, we had to walk the long way on the sidewalk. I often think of what LaNard Johnson said when we were talking to him about Daddy. He said, “We were poor back then, but didn’t know it because everyone was in the same boat.”
On my daily walk, I walk along a trail that goes along the Virgin River. When I see the water, I think that some of that water ran through Orderville – and down through the Barracks. Some of it started in Bob Creek and ran down through the Narrows.
We hope you have a great holiday season.
Love, Jerry & Lana Gale
Yip, these are the old-timers
born and reared in that era.
Siblings: Verla, Carol, Lynn & Jeanette
Lynn's wife, Juanita, wasn't in our household
but she was raised in the Valley.
Youthful Carol made a Santa out of vegetables.
Of course, we served soup
being descendants of
the Orderville United Order
and Soup Town.
Lynn brought Apple Cider made from his own apple trees;
DeRay made sour dough bread
and penoche like Mama used to put on her
Fruit Cakes.

Merry Christmas to All!
