Low Snow

“I can’t believe we rode our trikes in February,” Ed says when he comes in after riding for two hours. We wore jackets but a guy passed us on a bike wearing shorts and a t-shirt. This morning when I went out to pick up the paper, a kid was riding to school on his bike in shorts. 63 degrees this afternoon. I don’t know what it was this morning. Someone in Park City was complaining because it rained all night. He kept hoping it would turn into snow but no. In February. There’s no such thing as global warming. It’s a farce made up by the scientists. They are pranksters all.

Near-record low snowfall totals in Salt Lake City in January
Salt Lake City residents enjoyed a white Christmas, but snow has been nearly nonexistent ever since.
National Weather Service meteorologist Christine Kruse said Monday that the snowfall total at the Salt Lake City International Airport for January was the fourth-lowest since 1885.
She says only 0.3 inches of snow fell. That's far less than the 30-year-average of 12.5 inches.
In some parts of the mountains east of Salt Lake City, snowfall levels were also below normal. At a station near the Alta Ski Area, 28.5 inches of snow were recorded. The average for that station is 71 inches.
Kruse says high pressure systems over the West kept temperatures above normal and prevented precipitation from becoming snow.

Saturday February 7 - 68 degrees in Fruit Heights.
65 Degrees broke a record on Thursday - 3 degrees above the previous high.

Spring = Snow and Sunshine

Snow on plants on deck - May 30, 2011
The nice thing about spring
is that it can snow
one day;
and unlike winter,
the next day you
can hang clothes out
on the line barefoot.
Sunshine - May 31, 2011

APRIL 29, 2011

As we were coming home from the gym at 1 PM,
the temp was 42 degrees;
snow flurries.
5 PM
Snow on the rooftops;
snow on the mountains;
snow on the valleys;
snow on the garden;
snow on the deck;
snow on the table on the deck;
snow on the van top;
snow on the tulips.
Snow coming down like crazy.
Gather in the tomatoes, the peppers, and the broccoli.
Close the windows.
Light a fire in the fireplace.
Hunker down.
Watch a good movie.
Watch the Royal Wedding.
Drats; the Endeavors’ launch was scrubbed
because of a faulty heater part
until at least Monday.
Am I complaining?
No tornadoes here.
Bless Alabama.

BONUS BLESSINGS

Even in early December
we were tired of winter and snow
freezing wind, sleet, fog and colorless days.
Heading to San Diego to catch the sunshine
on a cruise to Mexico,
I commented after waking up in Primm
with the sun shining brightly,
“It’s such a blessing to wake up to sunshine.”
“At our age," DeRay muses,
it's a blessing to wake up;
a bonus to wake up to sunshine.”

BE THANKFUL TOGETHER; WHATEVER THE WEATHER

Ed told me the temperature for this day in 1936, the year I was born, was 12 degrees, a record low.
Burrrr.  I’ll bet my mother had me bundled up in our big drafty house without central heating.  (“What’s that?” we would have asked.)  Or perhaps she moved the bassinet in by the warm wood-burning stove.  I would have been only a month old.  Hopefully my 2- and 4- and 6- and 8-year old brothers and sisters would have been playing around the stove and maybe making pictures by scraping ice off the windows with their fingernails.  Jack Frost would have paid a visit during the night.  Let’s see, Shirley and Lucy would have been in school.  I hope they dressed warmly as they trudged up the hill to the school house.  There would be no car pool for them.  We had only one vehicle (if that) and Daddy would have had the pickup out to the herd.  Besides that, Mama didn’t drive.
Our high today will be 64.  Low 41.  I hung the clothes out on the line barefoot, leaving the sliding doors wide open while I was out in capris and short sleeves.  Ed and I are just heading out for a trike ride.  We may start out with a light jacket just because it’s November but we’ll probably take it off before we get home.

“You would have been a cute little baby then,” Ed continues.
“Yes, I was cute.”
“Well, you’re not now.”
POW!
